At the end of January, OpenAI enabled ChatGPT users to seamlessly incorporate third-party apps powered by its AI models directly into chats. In their X account, OpenAI posted

“This allows you to add relevant GPTs with the full context of the conversation,”

Now, premium ChatGPT subscribers have the novel ability to add GPTs into discussions. They can do it, by simply using the “@” symbol followed by selecting a desired GPT. This feature allows for the chosen GPT to grasp the entire conversation history, ensuring a contextually aware exchange across various applications and needs.

OpenAI’s initiative aims to enhance the visibility and utility of GPTs. Specifically, it follows the recent debut of the GPT Store, a dedicated marketplace within the ChatGPT interface where users can find GPTs for diverse functionalities. The development of these GPTs is designed to be accessible. Also, it requires no coding skills, and they range from simple aids to complex tools. Currently, offers include a hiking trail recommender from AllTrails, a programming tutor from Khan Academy, and a content creation assistant from Canva.

OpenAI is exploring monetization opportunities for developers to profit from their GPT creations. However, engagement metrics reveal a need to increase user interaction with custom GPTs. Currently, these GPTs account for just 2.7% of ChatGPT’s global web traffic. This initiative faces challenges, notably in moderating content to ensure compliance with OpenAI’s guidelines. These guidelines are highlighted by the early influx of inappropriate and politically charged GPT apps. OpenAI plans to expand the GPT ecosystem but faces the challenge of maintaining a balanced and rule-abiding platform.
