Despite the significant decline in the popularity of NFT and blockchain-based games, Ubisoft remains steadfast in its commitment to this technology. The French video game giant, known for its successes like Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six, has announced a new collaboration with Double Jump.Tokyo, a leading developer of blockchain applications and Web3 games.
This partnership marks a significant effort by Ubisoft to rejuvenate its previously announced project, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. Originally revealed last year, the game is a turn-based PvP RPG that heavily incorporates non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These NFTs will allow users to acquire new characters within the game, and they must own at least three to participate.
Ubisoft’s collaboration with Double Jump.Tokyo aims to explore the potential of Web3 and digital ownership in gaming. Hironobu Ueno, CEO of Double Jump.Tokyo, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the opportunity to accelerate the global adoption of Web3 gaming technology. This collaboration not only highlights Ubisoft’s ambition to delve deeper into blockchain technology but also opens avenues into the Asian market, broadening its user base and enhancing community engagement.
This is not Ubisoft’s first foray into the world of NFTs. In 2021, the company launched “Quartz,” a platform designed to distribute special NFTs linked to its iconic titles. However, the platform failed to achieve the expected success and quickly faded from the spotlight. Ubisoft’s persistence in this area demonstrates its long-term vision for integrating blockchain technology into its gaming ecosystem.
In addition to its NFT endeavors, Ubisoft continues to diversify its offerings. Early in July, the company announced the start of filming for a movie adaptation of Watch Dogs, aiming to expand the franchise beyond video games. Financially, Ubisoft reported revenues of 2.3 billion euros for the fiscal year 2023-2024, a 33% increase from the previous year, indicating growing interest in its titles.
The Impact of the New Partnership
The partnership with Double Jump.Tokyo represents a significant step for Ubisoft in the realm of Web3 games and blockchain technology. By integrating NFTs into “Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles,” Ubisoft is set to offer a unique gaming experience that leverages the capabilities of blockchain. This move is expected to enhance user interaction and expand Ubisoft’s reach into the Asian market, facilitating a broader community engagement.
