Suiplay0x1 is the first hardware device to combine gaming and cryptocurrency. Mysten Labs, the creator of the Sui cryptocurrency project, which operates on a proof-of-stake blockchain, has revealed its latest venture: the development of the Suiplay0x1. This innovative, Web3-compatible portable gaming console is poised to redefine the gaming experience.
While specific hardware details remain under wraps, the company has indicated that the console will support the concurrent operation of diverse app stores. This capability is made possible by Playtron’s universal gaming operating system. Additionally, the console will boast direct integration with the Sui ecosystem, enhancing its functionality and appeal to crypto-savvy gamers.
During its Sui Basecamp event—a gathering of the SUI community in Paris—the company disclosed its ongoing efforts towards developing Suiplay0x1, a Web3 portable gaming console set to host various app stores within a unified device ecosystem.
At its core, the device revolves around Playtronos, a lightweight operating system tailor-made for portable consoles. Playtron is a company that emerged from stealth mode with a $10 million seed investment in March. It aims to establish an integrated ecosystem that amalgamates native and externally published games.
Furthermore, the console will boast direct integration with Sui, enabling third parties to leverage this Web3 implementation, offering low fees and swift transactions tailored to the gaming ecosystem.
Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder of Sui, envisions this device as a gateway for developers to harness the combined advantages of the Sui chain and Web3 gaming. He stated:
“We’ve already built a chain that scales and can handle gaming traffic… Sui can become part of that meta layer, allowing game publishers to benefit from their ecosystem with direct ownership of resources.”
Mysten Labs has established partnerships with several game developers who are actively working on launching games on the Sui blockchain. While some of these games are still under wraps, their exciting potential awaits players and crypto enthusiasts alike.
Abiodun also said: “I love the fact that we’re not literally excluding existing ecosystems with this. We want every ecosystem to benefit. This is actually an uplift for Web3. And now this technology allows games to engage with users at a very high throughput, very high rate.”
Mysten’s Sui cryptocurrency and blockchain will cryptographically bind certain games to the portable console (and game store), although hardware specifics have yet to be unveiled. This would enable users to purchase and own games on the blockchain. Mysten Labs also promises cryptographic incentives and rewards upon purchase and gameplay.
Suiplay0x1 is set for a likely release in 2025. Notably, it will support an extensive array of games, including Web3 options and popular titles from platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Moreover, many backers, such as Samsung Next and Polychain Capital, have shown their support for Playtron’s operating system. Their contributions have led to a remarkable funding round of $10 million. At its helm are Kirt McMaster and John Lagerling, former Cyanogen CEO and former Google executive (behind Android development), respectively.
The project’s challenge is to compete directly with the market giants, starting with Steam, focusing everything on the development of the gaming world’s Web3 alternative. Furthermore, the goal is to achieve mass adoption of Web3, which requires a dedicated console. Additionally, the starting price will probably be $500. They are considering implementing an airdrop program in the upcoming months to incentivize purchases.
