Pavel Durov shared in his X account that Telegram and xAI have agreed on a 1-year partnership with Grok. In this agreement, xAI will be implemented on Telegram Messenger, distributing it to more than a billion users.

Furthermore, according to Durov, Telegram will receive $300M in cash and 50% of revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram.

In his X post, Durov also shared a video that suggests that Grok can be pinned on top of chats within the app. That is how Telegram users could ask Grok questions from the search bar. Other potential features include using Grok for writing suggestions, summarizing chats, searching for links, documents, and creating stickers. Grok is also expected to assist businesses by answering questions and helping with content moderation.

Elon Musk’s response

However, later the same day (28th of May), Elon Musk commented on Durov’s post, stating that xAI had not signed an agreement with Telegram. Durov has clarified in response that the two parties had “agreed in principle,” though formalities were still being finalized.

Neither side has provided a timeline for completing the agreement or launching the initiative.

Trend for implementing AI in messengers

Integrating AI models in messengers is a new trend. Very recently, Meta has also integrated Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram. Implementing AI into messages and other similar apps helps significantly facilitate messaging and searching processes. Moreover, AI serves as a useful tool for business accounts, helping to leverage customer communications via social media.

Public reaction

According to X’s reactions, the majority of Telegram and Grok users embraced such a collaboration. Both Elon Musk and Pavel Durov advocate for minimal censorship and free expression on digital platforms. Musk has emphasized this stance through his management of X, while Durov has consistently promoted privacy and resistance to government interference on Telegram. That is why users observed this collaboration as an open-source, non-profit platform for public economic foresight.

However, some users expressed skepticism about the potential collaboration, especially after Elon Musk called out the fact that it is not official yet. They questioned whether Telegram’s user base is being leveraged for financial gain, suggesting that the reported $300M deal might prioritize commercial interests while allowing xAI’s Grok to access user data.

Whether Telegram users will see a collaboration with xAI remains to be seen. Uncertainty arose after Elon Musk appeared displeased with Pavel Durov for prematurely sharing news of the potential partnership.
