Are Artificial Intelligence on the verge of reasoning? Quite possibly, yes. Advanced AIs capable of reasoning, such as Llama 3 and Chat GPT-5, are poised to enter the market in a few months, marking a significant leap forward. OpenAI and Meta, two giants in the field, are gearing up to launch these new models that promise to revolutionize the way we interact with machines.

OpenAI’s Milestone: Chat GPT-5

There is a lot of excitement within the AI community as they eagerly await the unveiling of Chat GPT-5, which has been touted as OpenAI’s most advanced AI model thus far. OpenAI, along with its CEO Sam Altman, has been subtly hinting at the model’s development, yet details about this upcoming large-scale language model remain scarce.

In a conversation earlier this year with Bill Gates, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, confirmed the development of Chat GPT-5 but withheld specifics regarding its release.

Following the pattern of GPT-4’s announcement a few months after the introduction of ChatGPT and considering the two-year development period for the new iteration, a 2025 release for Chat GPT-5 seems plausible. Nevertheless, a recent report from Business Insider suggests that OpenAI might unveil GPT-5 as soon as this summer.

Chat GPT-5: What’s new?

Sam Altman confirmed that GPT-5 will be a big improvement over the current version and will have more parameters than the current version. Open AI also states that Chat GPT-5 “will be a state-of-the-art language model that makes it feel like you are communicating with a person rather than a machine.” Let’s take a look at some of the new features:

1. Advanced Reasoning:

Chat GPT-5 is expected to reason and comprehend the world in a more complex manner, paving the way for a new generation of chatbots and virtual assistants.

2. Video Integration:

The model might include the ability to process and understand videos, enabling the creation of even more immersive and interactive artificial intelligence applications.

3. Extended Context:

Thanks to an extended context window, Chat GPT-5’s responses should be more coherent and relevant, allowing the AI to understand the conversation better. But will it be free? Currently, the free version of ChatGPT is based on GPT-3.5, but it is a rather old model. If you want to use the latest OpenAI model instead, you will have to pay $20 per month. As for Chat GPT-5, it will likely be locked behind a similar paywall.

OpenAI’s Goal

OpenAI’s ambition is to create fully autonomous agents capable of performing tasks on command without direct supervision. This would radically change how we interact with AI, making them even more powerful and versatile tools.

Meta’s Pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Meta confirmed its plan to release a light version of Llama 3. This move brings Meta closer to its goal of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Speaking at an event on Tuesday, April 9, Meta president of global affairs Nick Clegg stated that the company will begin rolling out some of its Llama 3 models sometime this month. He stated, according to TechCrunch:

Within the next month, actually less, hopefully in a very short period, we hope to start rolling out our new suite of next-generation foundation models, Llama 3.”

He also said: “There will be a number of different models with different capabilities and different versatilities [released] during this year, starting really very soon.”

Llama 3 is Meta’s answer to OpenAI’s GPT-4, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude 3 and other LLMs. Meta has introduced Llama 2, which has enabled the company to establish a foothold in the AI market. However, Meta still has some ground to cover in terms of market leadership as OpenAI and other players continue to dominate the industry. The company has spent billions of dollars on AI investments and purchased hundreds of thousands of Nvidia H100 GPUs. Meta is prepared to compete with other major technology companies.

What are Meta’s Moves?

Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta remains committed to other innovative projects like the Metaverse. The goal is to integrate AI characters into social applications and develop increasingly immersive VR technologies.

Bottom Line

The launches of Chat GPT-5 and Llama 3 represent a milestone for AI innovations. These models with “reasoning capabilities” undeniably mark a significant advancement in the field of AI. Simultaneously, it presents a new challenge, as seen in Europe with the recent enactment of the first law governing AI use

To fully utilize these technologies’ capabilities while minimizing the risks and drawbacks, it is crucial to engage in open and honest communication and implement effective regulations. As we move forward into uncharted territory, the future of AI is both exciting and uncertain. It is up to us to navigate this uncharted path responsibly and with consideration for the consequences of our actions.
