In a significant move to challenge AI giants, Elon Musk's new AI venture, xAI, has launched Grok, an AI chatbot with a distinctive personality. Grok, which is currently in its early beta phase, comes with a mission to engage users with its wit and humor. It's designed to answer even the "spicier" questions that many other AI systems might dodge.
Grok represents a considerable leap in the world of AI chatbots. It leverages real-time access to information on X, which gives it an edge in delivering up-to-date responses. Moreover, it possesses internet browsing capabilities, enabling it to search the web for the latest information.
Notably, Grok won't shy away from playful interactions, as seen when Musk posted an example of its response to a questionable request. Despite its unique personality, xAI acknowledges that Grok, like other LLM, can still produce contradictory outputs.
Early testing indicates that Grok has performed impressively. It surpassed models like ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1 in initial tests related to middle school math problems and Python coding tasks. Although it was outperformed by models with more extensive datasets, Grok was deemed "the best that currently exists" in some important respects, as Elon Musk stated.
Grok-1, the underlying LLM for Grok, has been developed over several months. Training data came from web sources up to Q3 2023, augmented with feedback from human assistants.
Musk stated that everyone subscribed to X’s Premium Plus plan, which costs $16 per month for ad-free access to X, will get access to Grok “once it’s out of early beta” Separately, xAI is offering a limited number of US users access to Grok.
