Meta’s Bold Bet on AI-Generated Social Media Profiles

AI-generated Social Media

Can you imagine reading through Facebook or Instagram and striking up a discussion with what appears to be a real person, only to discover they’re part of AI-generated social media profiles? That is exactly what Meta has in store: millions of AI-generated personas ready to interact with users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As first reported by the Financial Times and thereafter discussed by numerous insiders, this endeavor symbolizes Meta’s intentional effort to catch the attention of younger audiences and redefine how people connect on social media.

“We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms in much the same way that accounts do,”
— Connor Hayes, Vice President of Product for Generative AI at Meta.

AI-Generated Social Media Profiles: A New Kind of Social Experience

Hayes explains that these AI-powered accounts will include biographies, profile images, and the capacity to publish and distribute AI-generated content. If successful, this could alter everyday interactions on Meta’s platforms. The company believes it will make its apps “more entertaining and interactive.”

Meta has already been busy laying the groundwork for these changes. In the U.S., it introduced a feature enabling users to create private AI characters. Although still limited in scope, these early experiments signal Meta’s long-term plan to roll out AI-driven profiles at scale. Moreover, the company recently hired the creator of SocialAI—an app where users converse only with algorithmic personalities—to continue experimenting in this space.

From Bots to Intelligent Avatars

Bots have existed on social media for years, often associated with spam or malicious behavior. Meta’s initiative, however, aims at a more structured and ostensibly beneficial application of AI: creative tools that help users edit photos, generate lifelike avatars, and even hold personalized conversations. In the near future, creators might launch AI-based “fan avatars,” which can converse on-brand and within pre-set guidelines—effectively acting as digital representatives or spin-offs of their real-life personas.

“Without robust safety measures in place, platforms risk amplifying false narratives through these AI-based accounts.”
— Becky Owen, former Head of Creator Innovations at Meta.

AI-Generated Social Media Profiles: Risks and Repercussions

Meta experts and former workers have expressed skepticism. While AI profiles could inject novelty into social networks, there is real concern about misinformation and user trust. If AI-generated content is indistinguishable from human posts, separating fact from fabrication could become even more challenging.

Becky Owen warns that without clear guidelines, Meta’s platforms could become breeding grounds for misleading narratives and deceptive campaigns. Such concern is intensified by Meta’s ongoing efforts to integrate generative AI into all aspects of the company. Meta’s efforts raise concerns that the ‘entertainment factor’ may take precedence over the company’s duty to foster authentic relationships with the community.

The Quest for Younger Users

Meta’s approach is centered on the race to stay relevant, particularly among teenagers and young people, who are increasingly flocking to TikTok or newer platforms such as Bluesky. In the past, Mark Zuckerberg predicted that AI would change almost every facet of Meta’s business. In order to keep people on the platform longer, we are starting to see how that vision can come to pass: using AI to create interactive experiences, such as digital avatars and text-to-video capabilities.

However, the fundamental question remains: will these AI-powered accounts damage the authenticity that initially attracted users to social networks?

Some see a future in which AI supports artists and encourages more complex forms of expression. In contrast, others worry about a dystopian cycle in which algorithmic content eventually replaces genuine human connection. Despite these reservations, Meta appears unfazed and is moving forward with its plan to conflate artificial and human social interactions.

The coming years will reveal whether Meta’s gamble succeeds in reinvigorating its platforms—or if it ultimately alienates users seeking genuine human engagement. As AI accounts proliferate, regulators, creators, and audiences will no doubt be watching closely to see how well Meta balances entertainment, ethical considerations, and the core social value of community.
